Professional Standards Framework

CRT is developing a professional standards framework for individuals and businesses in international commodity trade. This includes a Competence Framework, a Code of Professional Conduct, a formal certification pathway, and an independent consultation process for new standards.

In development Updated June 2026

Purpose of professional standards

Professional standards serve three purposes in any field: they define what competence looks like, they set the minimum conduct required of practitioners, and they provide a basis for external verification and accountability. CRT's standards framework is designed to serve all three purposes for the commodity trading profession.

Unlike regulated fields such as law or medicine, commodity trading has no universal professional standard. CRT proposes to fill this gap with a framework that is independent, practically grounded and internationally applicable.

The standards framework

The CRT standards framework consists of three interconnected documents:

Professional Competence Framework
Defines the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of a registered commodity trading professional. Structured by level and domain. Currently in draft.
Code of Professional Conduct
Sets out the ethical and professional conduct obligations of all CRT members. Covers integrity, client interests, conflicts of interest, market conduct and professional development. Currently in draft.
Certification Standards
Defines the assessment criteria and processes for the Foundation Certificate and specialist qualifications. In development.

All three documents will be subject to public consultation before finalisation. Consultation timelines are shown on the Consultations page.

Certification pathway

Certification is the mechanism by which individuals demonstrate that they meet the Competence Framework. The proposed pathway begins with the Foundation Certificate in Trade Compliance and extends into specialist qualifications for specific sectors or roles.

Certification is not yet available. The programme is in development. Full details are on the Certification page and the Foundation Certificate page.
