Assessment

CRT's proposed assessment methodology for the Foundation Certificate and specialist qualifications. The assessment process is in development; final methodology will be published once the Standards Committee and faculty have confirmed the approach.

In development Updated June 2026

Assessment principles

CRT's assessment is designed to be: valid — assessing what the syllabus intends; reliable — producing consistent results regardless of marker or sitting; fair — accessible to candidates with diverse backgrounds and learning styles; and practical — achievable alongside professional practice without requiring full-time study leave.

CRT does not propose to make assessment artificially difficult. The standard is calibrated to the Foundation level of the Competence Framework — demonstrating knowledge and understanding, not expert-level performance.

Assessment components

Module assessments (×7)
A structured written assessment for each module. Proposed format: a combination of short-answer questions testing knowledge recall, and a case-study question requiring application to a realistic scenario. Each module assessment is taken on completion of that module and must be passed before proceeding.
Integrated examination
A comprehensive examination integrating learning from all seven modules. Proposed format: a set of case-study-based questions drawing on multiple domains. Taken on completion of all module assessments.

Specific question formats, time allowances and permitted materials will be confirmed and published prior to programme launch.

Pass standard

The pass standard for all assessments will be set by the Standards Committee and published prior to the programme launch. It will be set at a level that requires genuine understanding and application of the syllabus, not rote memorisation.

Specific pass mark thresholds have not yet been set. They will be determined following a standard-setting exercise conducted by the faculty and reviewed by the Standards Committee.

Resits and appeals

Candidates who do not meet the pass standard in a module assessment or the integrated examination will be permitted to resit. The number of permitted resit attempts, waiting periods and any applicable fees will be published in the programme regulations.

Candidates may appeal an assessment result on the grounds of procedural error or factual mistake. Appeals must be submitted within the published timescale. Assessment appeals are not a mechanism for challenging the academic judgement of markers on questions of interpretation.

Assessment integrity

CRT takes assessment integrity seriously. Suspected academic misconduct — including plagiarism, collusion and impersonation — will be investigated and may result in disqualification and membership consequences. Specific integrity procedures will be published as part of the programme regulations.
